Author’s Talk: Applegate Valley During the Great Depression, 18+ YRS

Twenty-two-year-old Marguerite Black came to Forest Creek to teach school in 1932. In her book, historian Laura Ahearn supplements her interpretation of Marguerite’s deeply intimate diary entries with the voices of three friends and contemporaries, news reporter Maude Pool, Beaver Creek student Frances Port, and today’s 100-year-old Evelyn Williams, to craft a multifaceted description of life in the Applegate during the 1930s. Extensive research into primary resources revealed intriguing facts about the local economy, politics, and neighborhood feuds.
Laura is President of McKee Bridge Historical Society and editor of “Back In Time,” a compendium of articles written by Evelyn Williams for The Applegater newsmagazine.
