SUMMARY:SOCAN Film Night: Youth v Gov
DESCRIPTION:Film Night: Southern Oregon Climate Action Now’s next monthly general meeting\, on Tuesday January 27th at 6:00pm at the Medford public Library. \nJoin us for a community screening of Youth v. Gov\, a powerful documentary following a group of young Americans who take the U.S. government to court over its failure to protect their constitutional right to a livable future. The film offers an inside look at youth-led climate litigation\, civic courage\, and the growing role of the courts in addressing the climate crisis. A timely reminder that civic engagement doesn’t stop at the ballot box—and that young people are helping reshape what accountability looks like. \n*SOCAN will be providing popcorn and hot tea.

SUMMARY:How to Go Solar + Storage and Find Incentives
DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by: Solar Oregon\, Energy Trust of Oregon \nHave you ever discussed with family and friends how to escape utility price hikes by going solar? Not everyone can quickly throw a few solar panels on their roof and join the burgeoning community of solar-powered homes. Going solar doesn’t require leaving the grid; many solar-powered homes remain grid-tied so folks can use the grid source when the sun isn’t shining but can vastly reduce their consumption of grid power and suffering its ever-increasing cost. \nNicole Maticic\, Program Manager with Solar Oregon will join us at our June 24 open public meeting to help us understand how solar energy and battery systems work\, share information about incentives for reducing our dependence on the utilities. The meeting will be from 6:00 – 7:30 pm on Tuesday June 24 at the Medford Public Library\, 205 S. Central Avenue\, Medford. \nThis monthly program is consistent with SOCAN’s interest in encouraging Southern Oregonians to electrify their lives as much as possible. Nicole will be joined by energy industry professionals\, along with local enterprises and non-profits that support homeowners in solarizing and electrifying their homes. The program will answer Southern Oregonians’ questions about the advantages and disadvantages of solarizing as well the financial aspects of reducing grid consumption of electricity including finding incentives. \nPlease join us to learn more about the exciting opportunities that solarizing can offer residents of the Rogue Valley. \nInformation Tables from related businesses and non-profits in the Rogue Valley will be available to answer your questions. \nBusinesses and Non-profits currently confirmed: Solarize Rogue\, Electrify Ashland Now (Action Team of Ashland Climate Collaborative)\, SOCAN’s Talent Climate Action Team\, and Rogue Solar Solutions \nContact information available for Alternative energy Systems (Solar Energy and Radiant heat solutions for Southern Oregon) and True South Solar (Take Control of your Energy Future) \nSOCAN meets monthly in person with speakers on topics related to climate change. \nThese meetings are free and open to the public. Specific details are posted monthly

SUMMARY:Election 2024: What does it mean for climate action? [SOCAN General Meeting}
DESCRIPTION:Elections always have consequences. This is especially the case for our potential to address the climate crisis when some candidates for office accept the science of global warming and it’s climate change consequences while others display something between skepticism and outright rejection of science.  From the local to the national level the outcomes from the 2024 general election will indicate profoundly whether meaningful action is likely. \nThe Southern Oregon Climate Action Now November General Meeting will focus on an exploration of what the election results mean for climate action in the near future. Special guest and notable climate champion State Representative Pam Marsh will offer insight regarding what the election outcome means for climate action as we approach the 2025 long session. Additionally\, SOCAN co-facilitator. Alan Journet will explore what the results mean for federal action\, Denise Krause will discuss what results mean for the Jackson County Board of Commissioners and SOCAN co-facilitator Kathy Conway will do likewise for regional city election results.

SUMMARY:SOCAN’s 2024 Candidate Forum
DESCRIPTION:Since our establishment 12 years ago\, SOCAN has offered a candidate forum for candidates for office on the subject of Climate and the Environment.’ These events serve our mission to provide candidates and constituents an opportunity to discuss issues falling under this heading and promote a better-informed electorate. This year is no exception. The forum will occur from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the Medford Public Library on October 8th. \nCandidates for the following races will be attending: Jackson County Board of Commissioners; Oregon House Districts 4\, 5\, and 6; Oregon Senate District 2; Oregon Congressional District 2. All candidates in these races have been invited\, though we know that all will not appear. In order to provide audience members with greater involvement than previously\, we are restricting the SOCAN questioning to 1 question\, and opening the remainder of the time for audience questions on the subject. These questions will be submitted ahead of time to alan@socan.eco. Please submit questions by 5:00 pm October 7th.  We will also provide cards at the event for those joining us to submit a question. Questions may be general for all candidates or target a particular race or candidate. All questions will be vetted by a SOCAN panel for relevance to the topic\, repetition and clarity. For more information\, visit https://socan.eco/event/socan-candidate-forum/. The forum will be followed by a 30-minute informal meet ‘n’ greet opportunity when constituents can continue conversations with candidates.

SUMMARY:Oregon’s Proposed Floating Offshore Wind Project
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Marine Biologist\, Dr. Bill Gorham.\n\nWith Oregon’s goal of 100% clean electricity by 2040\, developing new renewable energy sources is critical\, and offshore wind is one of these potential sources. Offshore our southern Oregon and northern California coasts blow some of strongest\, most consistent\, and most predictable winds in the world. Responsibly tapping into this energy resource could supply up to 3 gigawatts of electric power\, enough to provide electricity to over half the homes in Oregon.\n\nMany of us have seen onshore wind turbines\, but far fewer people have seen or learned about offshore wind turbines\, especially here on the west coast. Bottom mounted wind turbine arrays are operational off the coasts of Virginia\, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. However\, unlike the US East coast with a wide\, shallow continental shelf\, our continental shelf drops away rapidly making the ground-mounted turbines infeasible here. A new hybrid technology of floating turbines is quickly being developed and deployed around the world.\n\nBill will discuss the status of Oregon’s floating offshore wind effort along with an update on the technical status. He will also share concerns raised by tribes\, fishing groups\, and local residents about the proposed project and how these are being addressed.

SUMMARY:How the Climate Crises are Affecting Our Mental Health (SOCAN Monthly Meeting)
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Liz Olson M.Div. BCC (Masters of Divinity\, Board Certified Chaplain) serves as a Specialty Chaplain with the in-patient Palliative Care team at Providence Medford Medical Center. With Ken Deveney\, Liz has\, for several years\, led gatherings of SOCAN’s monthly support group ‘Sustaining Climate Activists.’ \nDuring her presentation\, Liz will discuss why we should be concerned about our mental health as it pertains to climate change considering direct and indirect effects and differences among populations\, particularly people of color\, Indigenous communities and youth. During the second half of the program\, Liz will lead us through some interactive exercises that SOCAN’s support group “Sustaining Climate Activists” uses.

SUMMARY:Daunted by Climate Concern? Let's Explore Our Options
DESCRIPTION:Biologist and policy expert Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson has developed a valuable visual tool for helping us each figure out how we can individually contribute to addressing the daunting climate crisis.  During SOCAN’s January meeting\, we will discuss a short TED talk by Dr. Johnson during which she presents her vision. Rather than asking folks to try to solve the global problem alone\, Johnson offers a relatively painless route to identifying personal tactics that suggests that we first ask ourselves: ‘What brings you joy?’ She then asks us to identify ‘What we are good at?’ Finally\, where these intersect\, we ask ‘What needs doing (and falls within this intersection)?’ \nWith 2023 clocking in as the hottest year on record\, placing us very close to the 1.5⁰ degrees Centigrade above pre-industrial conditions that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change identify as our safe upper limit for warming\, those of us concerned about preserving some semblance of life as we know it on our planet must ensure that 2024 is the ‘Year for Significant Action.’ This may also be the hottest year in 125\,000 years\, indicating that we have not yet turned the corner on addressing this looming and daunting crisis. Responding to the crisis by claiming that\, ‘it’s all part of a natural cycle\,’ that ‘it’s too late to divert the trajectory\,’ or that ‘nothing I do makes a difference’ doom us to crossing tipping points beyond which there is no return. \nIt’s time for us all to reinvigorate ourselves and focus on what needs to be done. Through hands-on engagement\, SOCAN’s January Public General meeting will help us explore and identify what we can do.  The meeting will consider both individual actions that we can undertake and collective actions we can join that seek to move communities forward. If you are ready to revisit what you can do to make a difference\, please join us.

SUMMARY:What’s Happening to our Douglas firs?
DESCRIPTION:Anyone spending time in the dryer forests of Southern Oregon will have seen the splashes of orange among the healthy green backdrop.  These splashes of color portend our future; they represent Douglas firs that are expiring.  As the trees die\, the needles lose the healthy green chlorophyl that drives photosynthesis and produce the familiar orange splashes that increasingly dot the skyline of our hills. \nRetired Southern Oregon OSU Extension forester Max Bennett has been studying this phenomenon for some years. Bennett will provide an account of his findings and conclusions during the next Southern Oregon Climate Action Now monthly open public meeting.  The program will occur on Tuesday August 29th at 6:00 pm at the Medford Public Library. The presentation is free and open to the public.
