SUMMARY:Misinformation & Disinformation | SOCAN General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Misinformation and disinformation are undermining our democracy. We need to know how to identify them. Join us to explore how we can do it. \nThomas Jefferson summed up a critical element required of us in defense of our democracy: “An informed citizenry is at the heart of a dynamic democracy.” Recognizing and thwarting misinformation and disinformation are essential components in generating and maintaining an informed citizenry and defending our democracy. These are the scourge of credible journalism. Regrettably\, increasingly the forces of darkness seek to overtake society with conspiracy hoaxes driven by misinformation and disinformation. They are often enabled by a citizenry seeking stories that appeal to their confirmation bias rather offer credible information that may challenge that bias. \nThat we all need to be able to recognize misinformation and disinformation when it knocks on our door is clear. For those in the credible news arena\, it’s even more important that misinformation and disinformation should be identified and given no quarter. Southern Oregon Climate Action Now’s February Public General Meeting at 6:00 pm on Tuesday February 24th will feature a discussion of misinformation\, disinformation and how the credible media deal with it. Bert Etling\, Executive Director of Ashland.news\, will offer his perspectives on this troubling issue and share advice on how we can recognize this fraud when it appears. \nSOCAN’s general meetings are free and open to the public. There is no charge for attending. \n*This meeting is not sponsored nor endorsed by Jackson County Library Services

SUMMARY:SOCAN Film Night: Youth v Gov
DESCRIPTION:Film Night: Southern Oregon Climate Action Now’s next monthly general meeting\, on Tuesday January 27th at 6:00pm at the Medford public Library. \nJoin us for a community screening of Youth v. Gov\, a powerful documentary following a group of young Americans who take the U.S. government to court over its failure to protect their constitutional right to a livable future. The film offers an inside look at youth-led climate litigation\, civic courage\, and the growing role of the courts in addressing the climate crisis. A timely reminder that civic engagement doesn’t stop at the ballot box—and that young people are helping reshape what accountability looks like. \n*SOCAN will be providing popcorn and hot tea.

SUMMARY:Southern Oregon Wildfire Risk: The Climate Connection (SOCAN August General Meeting)
DESCRIPTION:Fire and smoke have become an annual source of concern for Oregonians\, especially for those of us living in the Southwest. As wildfire trends become increasingly obvious\, questions about their drivers become more urgent. Yet\, many factors affect wildfire behavior and impact: forest management\, disruptions to fire’s natural role\, patterns of development\, and\, importantly\, changes to the climate. What do we know about how wildfires are changing\, the causes\, and options for climate adaptation? \nDr. Chris Adlam\, Southwest Regional Fire Specialist with the Oregon State University Extension Service\, Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center\, will be the featured speaker at the August SOCAN monthly general meeting. Adlam will discuss how climate is influencing fire risk in the region\, what climate projections portend for our future\, and what steps we can take to minimize the risk. \nThe program will occur from 6:00 – 7:30 pm on Tuesday August 26th at the Medford Public Library\, 205\, S. Central Avenue\, Medford. There is no charge for attending SOCAN events.

SUMMARY:How Climate Science Divides Us: Social Dimensions of Climate Change Mitigation
DESCRIPTION:An abundance of scientific evidence is readily available confirming the reality of human-induced global warming and its climate consequences – and the causes. There is also a wealth of evidence regarding what is needed to divert the current climate trajectory which threatens life on the planet as we know it. Given this evidence\, climate scientists and activists are frustrated and disappointed by the limited success of climate mitigation policies. Dr Rob Winthrop\, a member of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Maryland\, has reflected on this conundrum and will discuss his thinking on the reasons for this failure. Dr. Winthrop’s presentation is the focus of the July Southern Oregon Climate Action Now monthly public general meetings. \nWinthrop argues that climate change is not an environmental problem; it is a social problem with profound environmental consequences. While acknowledging the soundness of climate science\, he questions how the science has been used to shape policies around highly technical objectives (such as “net zero” emissions) that lack social salience and fail to build consensus. He suggests that we should encourage social mobilization for a climate-positive future around shared goals\, not beliefs (including a belief in human-caused climate change). Thus\, he thinks that rather than focusing primarily on reducing greenhouse gas emissions\, we should pursue climate action as a co-benefit of other socially desired goals\, such as energy efficiency and self-reliance. \nThere is no charge for attending SOCAN events: https://socan.eco/climate-frustration.

SUMMARY:How to Go Solar + Storage and Find Incentives
DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by: Solar Oregon\, Energy Trust of Oregon \nHave you ever discussed with family and friends how to escape utility price hikes by going solar? Not everyone can quickly throw a few solar panels on their roof and join the burgeoning community of solar-powered homes. Going solar doesn’t require leaving the grid; many solar-powered homes remain grid-tied so folks can use the grid source when the sun isn’t shining but can vastly reduce their consumption of grid power and suffering its ever-increasing cost. \nNicole Maticic\, Program Manager with Solar Oregon will join us at our June 24 open public meeting to help us understand how solar energy and battery systems work\, share information about incentives for reducing our dependence on the utilities. The meeting will be from 6:00 – 7:30 pm on Tuesday June 24 at the Medford Public Library\, 205 S. Central Avenue\, Medford. \nThis monthly program is consistent with SOCAN’s interest in encouraging Southern Oregonians to electrify their lives as much as possible. Nicole will be joined by energy industry professionals\, along with local enterprises and non-profits that support homeowners in solarizing and electrifying their homes. The program will answer Southern Oregonians’ questions about the advantages and disadvantages of solarizing as well the financial aspects of reducing grid consumption of electricity including finding incentives. \nPlease join us to learn more about the exciting opportunities that solarizing can offer residents of the Rogue Valley. \nInformation Tables from related businesses and non-profits in the Rogue Valley will be available to answer your questions. \nBusinesses and Non-profits currently confirmed: Solarize Rogue\, Electrify Ashland Now (Action Team of Ashland Climate Collaborative)\, SOCAN’s Talent Climate Action Team\, and Rogue Solar Solutions \nContact information available for Alternative energy Systems (Solar Energy and Radiant heat solutions for Southern Oregon) and True South Solar (Take Control of your Energy Future) \nSOCAN meets monthly in person with speakers on topics related to climate change. \nThese meetings are free and open to the public. Specific details are posted monthly

SUMMARY:Oregon Environmental Council: over 50 years of defending our environment.
DESCRIPTION:The Oregon Environmental Council (OEC) was established in 1968 by concerned Oregonians across the state to protect the water\, air\, and land we all share and love.  OEC has a statewide focus and had long served as a leading organization in efforts to stimulate climate action in the Oregon legislature and among Oregon state agencies.  SOCAN has collaborated extensively over the years with OEC on climate action and their work in Southern Oregon. The SOCAN May general meeting will feature Max Light Pacheco from OEC talking about what OEC does to fulfill its mission. Max will preview OEC’s effort to stimulate electrification and energy efficiency in Medford – a project being undertaken in collaboration with SOCAN’s Medford Climate Action Team (MCAT).

SUMMARY:SOCAN’s Salem Legislative Advocacy 2025: A Mid-session update
DESCRIPTION:Given the absence of meaningful action on climate and environmental issues at the federal level\, all eyes are on the states. Our eyes\, of course\, are on Salem. This is Oregon’s long session\, when much can happen; it runs from January through June. By April 29th\, we’ll be over halfway through and will have a sense of what bills may be moving and what are likely dead. SOCAN’s Federal and State Legislative Project Team has been very active during this session following over 70 bills with closing in on 150 written comments from over 20 SOCAN activists to which another dozen oral comments delivered during Public Hearings can be added.\nAmong the bills under consideration\, several seek to resuscitate nuclear power plants in Oregon despite the 1980 ban\, several follow the lead of Project 2025 and seek to suppress the Oregon vote\, while others address water\, the energy transmission grid or forest and fire issues.\nAt the next SOCAN open monthly Public General meeting on April 29th\, we will discuss some of the critical bills that SOCAN is following and where things stand on issues of concern to us. We will also provide attendees with an opportunity to comment on bills of climate concern. \nThere is no charge for attending SOCAN events: https://socan.eco/events/

SUMMARY:Redefining Sustainability for a Turbulent 21st Century (SOCAN General Meeting)
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by John H. Giordanengo \nPrinciple Restoration Economist / Ecologist & CEO\, Economic Restoration\nAuthor:  Ecosystems as Models for Restoring Our Economies (to a stable & sustainable state). 2nd Edition in Publication\, Anthem Press.\n  \nThe concept of sustainable living urges we manage our planetary resources to reap the common benefits Earth provides without compromising future generations\, nor the health of the ecosystems we rely upon. This challenges an underlying premise that in a world with limited resources we can enjoy unlimited economic growth. If we ask ecosystems\, as ancient models of productivity and resilience\, what would they say about the structure of a sustainable economy? \nDrawing from three decades of experience and research in business\, economics\, ecology\, and conservation\, John H. Giordanengo (jor-da-nayn-go) explores the dynamic relationship between three governing components of highly complex systems—diversity\, energy\, and trade—to reveal a novel hypothesis on the structure of sustainable economies. The inspiration for his work is our economy’s sister system\, nature. \nThis talk presents thought-provoking perspectives on sustainability\, such as the role of economic succession in stimulating diversity and productivity\, an ecological explanation of the wealth gap\, and the natural geography of a sustainable economy. Other concepts include the role of business diversity in community resilience\, and non-technical approaches to a carbon-neutral economy. Giordanengo offers a novel approach to achieving lasting conservation\, recognizing that humanity’s most serious concerns cannot be resolved by just environmental and social advocates. \nAlan Greenspan and others predict this century to be highly turbulent\, with a confluence of social\, economic\, and environmental disturbances striking nations across the globe. Fear not\, for Earth’s ancient wisdom reveals that periods of disturbance favor evolved models. Nature’s eternal patterns of destruction and recovery reveal a clear path for restoring our economies to a sustainable state. Case studies from the U.S.\, Ecuador\, Sri Lanka\, and Italy will be shared as time allows. \nSOCAN meets monthly in person with speakers on Topics related to climate change. \nThese meetings are free and open to the public. Specific details are posted monthly.

SUMMARY:Election 2024: What does it mean for climate action? [SOCAN General Meeting}
DESCRIPTION:Elections always have consequences. This is especially the case for our potential to address the climate crisis when some candidates for office accept the science of global warming and it’s climate change consequences while others display something between skepticism and outright rejection of science.  From the local to the national level the outcomes from the 2024 general election will indicate profoundly whether meaningful action is likely. \nThe Southern Oregon Climate Action Now November General Meeting will focus on an exploration of what the election results mean for climate action in the near future. Special guest and notable climate champion State Representative Pam Marsh will offer insight regarding what the election outcome means for climate action as we approach the 2025 long session. Additionally\, SOCAN co-facilitator. Alan Journet will explore what the results mean for federal action\, Denise Krause will discuss what results mean for the Jackson County Board of Commissioners and SOCAN co-facilitator Kathy Conway will do likewise for regional city election results.

SUMMARY:SOCAN Sips for Sustainability Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:This November\, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) will mark its 12th year of passionate climate advocacy and education with “Sips for Sustainability\,“ a social and fundraising event. Unless we acknowledge and address the climate crisis\, sustainable living will not be possible. This inspiring evening brings the community together to champion climate science education and demonstrate a shared commitment to a sustainable future. \nWith live music from the Bill Scholer Band\, an array of wines\, beers and non-alcoholic beverages\, and the excitement of a mystery wine sale and eco-friendly raffle\, attendees will have the chance to connect\, reflect\, and contribute to meaningful climate action. \nAlthough the focus is on social interactions and conversation\, we will have a few short presentations. Among these will be a few encouraging words from Southern Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Keegan van Hook. Keegan is the interviewer\, narrator\, and editor of the excellent SOPBS series Energy Horizons which prominently features SOCAN cofacilitator Dr. Alan Journet. \nBy participating in “Sips for Sustainability\,” guests will directly support SOCAN’s mission to educate and empower communities with the knowledge needed to protect our planet for future generations. \n\n\n Unable to attend Sips for Sustainability? You can still contribute to our mission of climate science education! With your support\, we’re empowering our community to take meaningful climate action—thank you for making an impact!\n\n\n\n\nSuggested donation is $20. SUMMARY:How Climate Change is Impacting Oregon Farmers
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon farmers exist on the frontlines of climate change. This is because the variables of seasonal temperature and water availability are both dominant factors influencing crop viability and success and are also the primary variables influenced by global warming and its climate change consequences. \nMaud Powell\, with OSU Extension’s Southern Oregon Office in Central Points serves as Associate Professor of Practice in the Small Farms Program. SOCAN’s October monthly general meeting at the Medford Public Library on October 29th from 6:00 – 7:30 will feature a presentation by Maud that explores the impacts of climate change on farmers and ranchers in Southern Oregon\, especially related to their mental health and emotional well-being\, and an Oregon State University Initiative\, ‘Climate Stress and Grief: Building Resilience in Farmers and Ranchers’ that is addressing these concerns. Powell will also share initial findings from qualitative research conducted with Oregon farmers.

SUMMARY:SOCAN’s 2024 Candidate Forum
DESCRIPTION:Since our establishment 12 years ago\, SOCAN has offered a candidate forum for candidates for office on the subject of Climate and the Environment.’ These events serve our mission to provide candidates and constituents an opportunity to discuss issues falling under this heading and promote a better-informed electorate. This year is no exception. The forum will occur from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the Medford Public Library on October 8th. \nCandidates for the following races will be attending: Jackson County Board of Commissioners; Oregon House Districts 4\, 5\, and 6; Oregon Senate District 2; Oregon Congressional District 2. All candidates in these races have been invited\, though we know that all will not appear. In order to provide audience members with greater involvement than previously\, we are restricting the SOCAN questioning to 1 question\, and opening the remainder of the time for audience questions on the subject. These questions will be submitted ahead of time to alan@socan.eco. Please submit questions by 5:00 pm October 7th.  We will also provide cards at the event for those joining us to submit a question. Questions may be general for all candidates or target a particular race or candidate. All questions will be vetted by a SOCAN panel for relevance to the topic\, repetition and clarity. For more information\, visit https://socan.eco/event/socan-candidate-forum/. The forum will be followed by a 30-minute informal meet ‘n’ greet opportunity when constituents can continue conversations with candidates.

SUMMARY:Oregon’s Proposed Floating Offshore Wind Project
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Marine Biologist\, Dr. Bill Gorham.\n\nWith Oregon’s goal of 100% clean electricity by 2040\, developing new renewable energy sources is critical\, and offshore wind is one of these potential sources. Offshore our southern Oregon and northern California coasts blow some of strongest\, most consistent\, and most predictable winds in the world. Responsibly tapping into this energy resource could supply up to 3 gigawatts of electric power\, enough to provide electricity to over half the homes in Oregon.\n\nMany of us have seen onshore wind turbines\, but far fewer people have seen or learned about offshore wind turbines\, especially here on the west coast. Bottom mounted wind turbine arrays are operational off the coasts of Virginia\, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. However\, unlike the US East coast with a wide\, shallow continental shelf\, our continental shelf drops away rapidly making the ground-mounted turbines infeasible here. A new hybrid technology of floating turbines is quickly being developed and deployed around the world.\n\nBill will discuss the status of Oregon’s floating offshore wind effort along with an update on the technical status. He will also share concerns raised by tribes\, fishing groups\, and local residents about the proposed project and how these are being addressed.

SUMMARY:Why do we need the Oregon Coalition for an Environmental Rights Amendment?
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Mel Martin\, OCERA Strategy Committee \nEfforts to hold governments responsible for applying the Public Trust Doctrine to protecting our environment for future generations have been unsuccessful where state constitutions do not explicitly guarantee residents the right to clean air\, clean water\, and a healthy environment free from climate change.  This is in contrast to states where the presence of such a guarantee has been correlated with judicial success.  Oregon is one of the states that lacks such a constitutional guarantee. \nA newly formed group of collaborating individuals and organizations\, with which SOCAN is a collaborator\, is attempting to redress this oversight.  The Oregon Coalition for an Environmental Rights Amendment (OCERA) is developing a plan to amend the state constitution via ballot measure (the only way such an amendment can be undertaken). For more information\, visit OCERA’s webpage. \nIt seems that a constitutional amendment is necessary if Oregonians are to achieve responsible protection of our natural environment\, including clean air\, clean water\, and a stable climate. While no right is absolute\, an appropriate constitutional amendment could provide an enforceable right requiring the State to do its best to protect the environment\, in the public interest\, based on the best available science. The justification for such an amendment comprises both legal and moral imperatives.  The coalition held its kick-off in Salem on May 4th and now seeks Oregonians interested in promoting the effort. \nAt the monthly SOCAN general meeting on Tuesday May 28th at the Medford Public Library (205\, S. Central Avenue) Mel Martin from the OCERA strategy committee will deliver a presentation introducing the efforts of OCERA and inviting Southern Oregonians to join the campaign

SUMMARY:Daunted by Climate Concern? Let's Explore Our Options
DESCRIPTION:Biologist and policy expert Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson has developed a valuable visual tool for helping us each figure out how we can individually contribute to addressing the daunting climate crisis.  During SOCAN’s January meeting\, we will discuss a short TED talk by Dr. Johnson during which she presents her vision. Rather than asking folks to try to solve the global problem alone\, Johnson offers a relatively painless route to identifying personal tactics that suggests that we first ask ourselves: ‘What brings you joy?’ She then asks us to identify ‘What we are good at?’ Finally\, where these intersect\, we ask ‘What needs doing (and falls within this intersection)?’ \nWith 2023 clocking in as the hottest year on record\, placing us very close to the 1.5⁰ degrees Centigrade above pre-industrial conditions that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change identify as our safe upper limit for warming\, those of us concerned about preserving some semblance of life as we know it on our planet must ensure that 2024 is the ‘Year for Significant Action.’ This may also be the hottest year in 125\,000 years\, indicating that we have not yet turned the corner on addressing this looming and daunting crisis. Responding to the crisis by claiming that\, ‘it’s all part of a natural cycle\,’ that ‘it’s too late to divert the trajectory\,’ or that ‘nothing I do makes a difference’ doom us to crossing tipping points beyond which there is no return. \nIt’s time for us all to reinvigorate ourselves and focus on what needs to be done. Through hands-on engagement\, SOCAN’s January Public General meeting will help us explore and identify what we can do.  The meeting will consider both individual actions that we can undertake and collective actions we can join that seek to move communities forward. If you are ready to revisit what you can do to make a difference\, please join us.

SUMMARY:Youth v. Gov: Updates from Our Children’s Trust
DESCRIPTION:The youth of the world are those who will suffer most if we fail to address the climate crisis. Our failure to address this crisis is why many young people are angry and others are simply disillusioned.  Some\, meanwhile\, have joined forces through the Eugene-based nonprofit law firm\, Our Children’s Trust (OCT)\, to take legal action. This action takes the form of lawsuits against federal and state governments for their actions violating the youth’s constitutional rights and harming both young people and the natural resources they hold in trust for future generations. \nYOUTH v GOV is an independent film by acclaimed Director Christi Cooper\, Barrelmaker Productions and Vulcan Productions. It tells the story of the groundbreaking youth climate case\, Juliana v. United States. It is available for viewing via Netflix. Attendees are encouraged to watch it before the program. \nSOCAN’s August monthly meeting will feature a ZOOM presentation by Our Children’s Trust Senior Litigating Attorney Andrea Rodgers presenting an update on where the legal cases filed by Our Children’s Trust stand\, and what the future seems to hold. There is no charge for joining the ZOOM meeting\, but participants must register at the link on the SOCAN calendar event: https://socan.eco/OCT.
