SUMMARY:Building for a Resilient Future: How to Build Carbon Negative Housing (SOCAN April Monthly Mtg)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging overview of natural and biobased wall systems—an emerging approach to building that aligns climate responsibility with performance and design. This session will introduce what we mean by “natural” or “biobased” construction\, grounding the conversation in materials sourced from renewable\, plant-based systems that actively store carbon rather than emit it. We’ll explore the practical benefits of these materials\, from improved indoor air quality to long-term carbon sequestration\, and examine how they compare to conventional “green building” approaches that often reduce harm\, but stop short of reversing it. \nImportantly\, this event will also address one of the most pressing concerns in our region: fire resilience. Through real-world case studies\, we’ll highlight how certain natural wall systems perform under fire conditions\, challenging common assumptions and offering pathways toward safer\, more climate-aligned construction. Alongside performance\, we’ll showcase the wide aesthetic range these materials can achieve—demonstrating that sustainability does not require compromise in design. Whether you’re a builder\, designer\, policymaker\, or community member\, this conversation connects practical solutions with the broader goal of transforming how—and why—we build. \nSOCAN’s General Meeting is a free\, public gathering focused on building climate understanding\, resilience\, and action in Southern Oregon. Held on the last Tuesday of each month at the local library\, these meetings bring community members together to explore timely climate topics\, learn from informed perspectives\, and engage in meaningful discussion. The goal is to create an accessible space where complex issues can be examined clearly and collectively. \n*This meeting is not sponsored nor endorsed by Jackson County Library Services

SUMMARY:OCERA Listening Tour (SOCAN General Meeting)
DESCRIPTION:SOCAN’s March General Meeting will be structured as a listening session focused on the Oregon Environmental Rights Amendment (OCERA) and its relevance to climate action. Rather than a traditional lecture\, this gathering will center community voices\, questions\, and concerns about what environmental rights mean in practice and how constitutional protections could shape climate policy\, accountability\, and long-term stewardship. The session is designed to inform future advocacy while ensuring community perspectives help guide the conversation. \nAdditional programs will be offered throughout the region: \n\nTuesday March 31\, 2:00 pm at Mountain Meadows\, Ashland\nWednesday April 1\, 4:00 pm in the Science Theater at SOU\nThursday April 2\, 5:00 pm at Troon Vineyard and Farm\, 1475 Kubli Rd\, Grants Pass. Co-sponsored by Troon Vineyard and Farm.

SUMMARY:What’s Happening to our Douglas firs?
DESCRIPTION:Anyone spending time in the dryer forests of Southern Oregon will have seen the splashes of orange among the healthy green backdrop.  These splashes of color portend our future; they represent Douglas firs that are expiring.  As the trees die\, the needles lose the healthy green chlorophyl that drives photosynthesis and produce the familiar orange splashes that increasingly dot the skyline of our hills. \nRetired Southern Oregon OSU Extension forester Max Bennett has been studying this phenomenon for some years. Bennett will provide an account of his findings and conclusions during the next Southern Oregon Climate Action Now monthly open public meeting.  The program will occur on Tuesday August 29th at 6:00 pm at the Medford Public Library. The presentation is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Salem 2023: What's up? (Socan Monthly Meeting - In person)
DESCRIPTION:The April SOCAN General meeting – our first in-person meeting since the COVID crisis – will feature members of the SOCAN Federal and State project team reporting on which proposals are alive\, which are not\, and what climate conscious Oregonians can do to help those proposals that deserve our support. \nAfter a hard-fought race for Governor in 2022\, and a campaign in which she highlighted support for climate action\, Tina Kotek was triumphant against two candidates who both campaigned against climate action. Although the climate crisis is non-partisan\, the Democratic Party as a whole embraced climate action while the opposition campaigned against it. The 2023 Legislative session in Salem reflects this dichotomy. By late April\, we will know which proposals have a chance for passage and which have none; we will know by this meeting which proposals are moving and could use rural Oregonian help\, and which are not.

SUMMARY:Food Waste and the Climate Crisis: What to Know & What to Do
DESCRIPTION:Featured speakers: Flavia Franco of Southern Oregon Food Solutions\, Jeanette Hardison of the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition\, and Ellie Cosgrove of Rogue Valley Farm 2 School\nIn 2022\, the U.S. department of Agriculture stated: “Food loss and waste … exacerbates the climate change crisis with its significant GHG footprint. Production\, transportation\, and handling of food generate significant carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions\, and when food ends up in landfills\, it generates methane\, [which is] an even more potent greenhouse gas.” \nA 2021 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report concluded that “each year\, U.S. food loss and waste embodies 170 million metric tons of carbon dioxide greenhouse gas emissions– equal to the annual CO2 emissions of 42 coal-fired power plants.” This doesn’t even take landfill methane into account. \nTo learn more about food waste and what we can do to address it\, join Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) at their March 28th General Meeting online from 6:00 to 7:00pm. This month’s topic is “Food Waste and the Climate Crisis: What to Know & What to Do.” \nThere is no charge for joining the ZOOM meeting\, but participants must register: bit.ly/SOCANFoodWaste \n

SUMMARY:Expanding U.S. Climate Ambition in 2023: A conversation with Oregon U.S. Senator\, Jeff Merkley
DESCRIPTION:Despite holding a bare minimum of control in both chambers\, during the last Congress Democrats managed to pass the Inflation Reduction Act\, the most ambitious legislation targeting the climate crisis ever signed into law.  However\, as we enter a two-year period with Republican climate deniers in charge of the House\, we now face the question of how we can continue and expand upon this climate action at the federal level. Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley will join an upcoming discussion to highlight continued opportunities for federal action\, particularly from the executive branch\, including implementing the legislation passed last Congress. \nAt our January monthly public general meeting\, on Tuesday January 31st at 6:00pm\, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now will host Oregon Senator Merkley to discuss: Expanding U.S. Climate Ambition in 2023. \nThere is no charge for joining the ZOOM meeting\, but participants should register at the link on the SOCAN calendar event: https://socan.eco/events/.

SUMMARY:Election 2022 – Now What?
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 mid-terms represented a critical moment when voters were able to express the level of their concern by electing candidates who acknowledge the climate crisis and commit to action. \nThe November SOCAN general public meeting program will be devoted to exploring the results of the 2022 election and assessing how they influence local\, state\, and national efforts to address the climate crisis. In Oregon\, the Governorship and both chambers remain in the control of those concerned about the climate crisis. The view from the State Capitol will be presented by Oregon House District 5 Representative Pam Marsh while SOCAN co-facilitator Alan Journet will provide comments on local and federal possibilities. \nIn addition\, in response to frequent requests from SOCAN volunteers and program attendees for help in talking with friends and relatives who are skeptical about climate science\, we have arranged a program to do just that. Warren Kahn\, senior trainer for the More To Life international educational non-profit foundation and presenter of a two part workshop to be held in January 2023\, will introduce this special offering.

SUMMARY:Interfaith Work on Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Across the nation\, faith communities are increasingly engaging in climate action.  These efforts are varied\, ranging from concerted efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to providing support to frontline communities\, framed from an ethical or spiritual perspective.  Join us to hear an overview of faith-based climate action underway in Oregon and elsewhere and discuss how Southern Oregon climate activists may help stimulate additional faith-based action in our region. \nThe presentation will feature Cherice Bock\, Creation Justice Advocate\, with the Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon AND Oregon Interfaith Power & Light. \nSOCAN general meetings occur monthly on the last Tuesday\, currently via Zoom. They are free and open to the public. There is no charge for joining the ZOOM meeting\, but participants should register at the link on the SOCAN calendar event: https://socan.eco/events/
