SUMMARY:Southern Oregon Wildfire Risk: The Climate Connection (SOCAN August General Meeting)
DESCRIPTION:Fire and smoke have become an annual source of concern for Oregonians\, especially for those of us living in the Southwest. As wildfire trends become increasingly obvious\, questions about their drivers become more urgent. Yet\, many factors affect wildfire behavior and impact: forest management\, disruptions to fire’s natural role\, patterns of development\, and\, importantly\, changes to the climate. What do we know about how wildfires are changing\, the causes\, and options for climate adaptation? \nDr. Chris Adlam\, Southwest Regional Fire Specialist with the Oregon State University Extension Service\, Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center\, will be the featured speaker at the August SOCAN monthly general meeting. Adlam will discuss how climate is influencing fire risk in the region\, what climate projections portend for our future\, and what steps we can take to minimize the risk. \nThe program will occur from 6:00 – 7:30 pm on Tuesday August 26th at the Medford Public Library\, 205\, S. Central Avenue\, Medford. There is no charge for attending SOCAN events.

We’ll explore the practical benefits of these materials\, from improved indoor air quality to long-term carbon sequestration\, and examine how they compare to conventional “green building” approaches that often reduce harm\, but stop short of reversing it. \nImportantly\, this event will also address one of the most pressing concerns in our region: fire resilience. Through real-world case studies\, we’ll highlight how certain natural wall systems perform under fire conditions\, challenging common assumptions and offering pathways toward safer\, more climate-aligned construction. Alongside performance\, we’ll showcase the wide aesthetic range these materials can achieve—demonstrating that sustainability does not require compromise in design. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on\, peer learning circle designed for farmers and ranchers who are ready to create their farm-level Emergency Action Plans (EAP) and strengthen community coordination and resilience in the Applegate Valley. \n\n\nTogether\, we’ll share strategies from the Farmer Campus’ Farming through Wildfire Season\, including small farm and ranch emergency planning\, assess evacuation procedures\, including how to plan for livestock\, farmworkers\, and visiting customers. \n\n\nThis event is free to attend\, but registration is required.
