This is a film about a 10-day hike across the Siskiyou Crest, highlighting views, ecology, plant identification and geography. In June 2019, Luke Ruediger and Suzie Savoie hiked nearly 200 miles through the wildlands of the Crest, starting on the PCT above Ashland and ending at the Pacific Ocean near Crescent City. The journey traversed the Applegate River watershed, the Illinois River headwaters, the Smith River and the Klamath River watershed. Come along on this visual journey across a wild, largely unknown region, through old-growth forests, mountain meadows, and colorful rock gardens across the rugged spine of the Siskiyou Crest!
About the Presenters: Luke Ruediger and Suzie Savoie
Luke Ruediger is the Conservation Director for the Klamath Forest Alliance and also the Executive Director for the Applegate Neighborhood Network, a conservation organization focused on protecting the Applegate River watershed. Luke grew up in southwestern Oregon and has long worked to protect, restore, and defend the ecological integrity of the Siskiyou Mountains through both environmental activism and land stewardship.
After working in the horticultural nursery industry for seven years with both native and ornamental plants from around the world, Suzie Savoie returned to her roots with what originally inspired her love of botany: the flora of the Klamath-Siskiyou Ecoregion. Suzie has a B.A. in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing, leading to her passion for nature writing and environmental journalism. Suzie was an editor of The Siskiyou Crest: Hikes, History & Ecology, a book devoted to the unique ecology of the Siskiyou Mountains, and co-author of Native Pollinator Plants for Southern Oregon, an introductory guide for native pollinator plants in southern Oregon.
