SUMMARY:Managing our Forests for a Future with Climate Change (SOCAN September General Meeting)
DESCRIPTION:One of the natural assets most valued by Oregonians who cherish this beautiful state is our forested lands. Regrettably\, these forests are challenged by the interconnected threats of a changing climate and increasing wildfire risk. Fortunately\, efforts are underway to manage our forests in such a way as to reduce the impact of these trends. Southern Oregon Forest Restoration Collaborative (SOFRC) assisted by several other regional organizations locally is leading the way in addressing the SW Oregon forest management issue. \nSOFRC Executive Director Terry Fairbanks\, who has many years of forestry and silviculture experience with the USFS and BLM\, will be featured at the Southern Oregon Climate Action Now monthly general meeting on Tuesday September 29th from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at the Medford Public Library. Terry will discuss what SOFRC and associates are doing in the region to promote forest management that minimizes risks and promotes forest health as global warming continues to drive a changing climate. \nTopics Terry will address include: \n\nHow southwest Oregon’s dry forests need active management to stay healthy in a hotter\, drier climate.\nHow “ecological forestry” retains large\, old\, fire-resistant trees while restoring resilience.\nHow the Rogue Basin Strategy applies ecological principles across the basin in an effort to reduce wildfire and the risk to homes.\nManagement to keep carbon stable and concentrated in large\, fire-resistant trees – rather than in dense stands likely to be lost to severe wildfire.\nHow the Rogue Forest Partners are working on the ground across the Rogue Basin to promote heathy regional forests.\n\nThis meeting will be in-person only. \nSOCAN’s general meetings are free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Owls and Owl Pellets with John Jackson of Bugs-R-Us\, ALL AGES
DESCRIPTION:Get “hands-on” with real owl pellets! Play detective with latex gloves\, tweezers\, and magnifying glasses to discover what the owls have eaten. Participants get to keep whatever or whoever they find inside the pellets. Learn about owls in the environment and the part they play in the food-web cycle. We will even examine a taxidermied barn owl and hear various owl calls.

Each will offer an appetizer and wine for tasting. You’ll even get to meet some of the latest releases! Uncorked is a great opportunity to stock up on wine for upcoming gifts\, or parties. \nTickets are $59 and include a commemorative Wine Trail wine glass. \nBonus: Designated drivers tickets are FREE and they may sample the food. \nPlease Note – In an effort to conserve natural resources no tickets are mailed. You have your purchase confirmation as a receipt. Simply arrive at the location you’ve chosen\, and your name will be on a list to check in and start your tour. For those who have groups who want to start at the same location\, please purchase your tickets early and make sure everyone chooses the same start location. Locations fill up so that’s the best assurance of everyone getting your first choice start location.

DESCRIPTION:In this two-hour workshop\, you will gain hands-on practice using some of Oregon’s biggest and most important databases as well as some national databases that have a lot of information on Oregon. Customized for your community\, you’ll explore the databases to solve local research problems and there will be plenty of time to ask questions and research your own interests.
