In this session of the Open Palette series\, we’ll explore how strong value structure allows color to enhance a painting rather than overwhelm it. Working from simple value studies\, we’ll introduce color in a controlled way\, focusing on how hue\, temperature\, and saturation interact with established light and dark patterns. Students will learn practical strategies for preserving clarity and structure while adding richness and atmosphere through color. Through demonstration and guided studio work\, we’ll explore how to simplify complex scenes\, maintain a clear focal point\, and apply color in a way that strengthens both composition and visual impact. \nWhile this class builds naturally on ideas explored in previous Open Palette sessions\, each workshop is designed to stand on its own. \nArtists are welcome to join at any point in the series. DESCRIPTION:Join Pollinator Project Rogue Valley for our annual Spring Native Plant Sale for the Pollinators!  \nThis sale provides the largest selection of plants native to the Southern Oregon bioregion all in one place! \nLocation: Parking lot behind The Pollination Place\, 312 N. Main St.\, Phoenix (corner of 4th St.) \nFind lots of native plants that support your local pollinators from Pollinator Project Rogue Valley and vendors like Klamath Siskiyou Native Seeds\, Cornucopia Acres\, and OUR Community Forestry! Plus our friends with Siskiyou Native Plant Society\, Siskiyou Chapter! \n* Please expect the first hour or two to be VERY crowded! \n* Please – no dogs except service animals. \n* Parking is VERY limited at the sale site. You will find parking on Main Street\, along neighborhood streets\, and in the Umpqua Bank and Civic Center lots. Be prepared to walk a block or two \n* Vendors are unable to accept payment for other vendors – please pay for plants in the space they are in. \n* Not all vendors take credit cards. If paying in cash\, small bills are always appreciated. \n* If possible\, please bring boxes\, bins\, baskets\, or other containers to carry your plants. \n* Restroom facilities will not be available. \n* Helpful volunteers will be available to help with plant selection and to load out large purchases. \n* Vehicles will be able to access the area for pick up after purchase\, but bringing a cart to transport your purchases back to your car is a good idea. \n* Pollinator Project Rogue Valley will have merchandise for sale (native plant books\, bumble bee books\, yard signs) and donations are always appreciated! \nPollinator Project Rogue Valley is a volunteer-led Oregon-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit concerned about the health of our native pollinators and plant communities. We offer multiple programs to help realize our goal to increase\, protect\, and steward native plants for native pollinators. Our Growing Gardens for Pollinators program encompasses our on-site nursery where we propagate native plants to share with the community through donations and plant sales. This session will introduce what we mean by “natural” or “biobased” construction\, grounding the conversation in materials sourced from renewable\, plant-based systems that actively store carbon rather than emit it. We’ll explore the practical benefits of these materials\, from improved indoor air quality to long-term carbon sequestration\, and examine how they compare to conventional “green building” approaches that often reduce harm\, but stop short of reversing it. \nImportantly\, this event will also address one of the most pressing concerns in our region: fire resilience. Through real-world case studies\, we’ll highlight how certain natural wall systems perform under fire conditions\, challenging common assumptions and offering pathways toward safer\, more climate-aligned construction. Alongside performance\, we’ll showcase the wide aesthetic range these materials can achieve—demonstrating that sustainability does not require compromise in design. Whether you’re a builder\, designer\, policymaker\, or community member\, this conversation connects practical solutions with the broader goal of transforming how—and why—we build. \nSOCAN’s General Meeting is a free\, public gathering focused on building climate understanding\, resilience\, and action in Southern Oregon.
