DESCRIPTION:From American tall tales and Native American myths to Mexican fables\, Russian fairytales and beyond\, Will Hornyak weaves a wide web of beautifully crafted stories from oral traditions around the world.  A strong performer with a love for the music and rhythm of language\, Will fully engages his audiences in bringing traditional and original stories to life.  He often shares the stage with audience members with lively participation stories. \nWill teaches storytelling at Marylhurst University and performs at festivals\, schools\, theatres\, pubs and churches throughout the United States.  He has been a featured performer at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough\, Tennessee and at numerous regional festivals.  He was named Artist of the Year Young Audiences of Oregon and Southwest Washington. The National Storytelling Network awarded Will with the Brimstone Grant for his environmental education program: Living Streams: Stories for Healthy Watersheds. That program for K-6 schools\, has educated and entertained over 60\,000 students and teachers.  He lives in Milwaukie\, Oregon not far from the Willamette River where he loves to paddle a canoe.

DESCRIPTION:Spend an evening being amateur archaeologists while learning about Oregon’s archaeological history! August 14\, the Southern Oregon Historical Society partners with the Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology (SOULA)\, the Medford Bureau of Land Management (BLM)\, Crater Rock Museum\, and the Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project for our third annual “Archaeology Night.” at SOHS Hanley Farm. \nThere will be Archaeology 101 activities\, including: artifact cross-mending\, build-your-own stratigraphy jars\, compass-reading\, try your hand at the ancient art of atlatl throwing\, or test your animal bone knowledge with our “Faunal Matching” game. Hear about the latest finds from this summer’s “Public Archaeology and Remote Sensing” field school\, and enjoy the pop-up exhibit about the award-winning Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project. SUMMARY:Southern Oregon Wildfire Risk: The Climate Connection (SOCAN August General Meeting)
DESCRIPTION:Fire and smoke have become an annual source of concern for Oregonians\, especially for those of us living in the Southwest. As wildfire trends become increasingly obvious\, questions about their drivers become more urgent. Yet\, many factors affect wildfire behavior and impact: forest management\, disruptions to fire’s natural role\, patterns of development\, and\, importantly\, changes to the climate. What do we know about how wildfires are changing\, the causes\, and options for climate adaptation? \nDr. Chris Adlam\, Southwest Regional Fire Specialist with the Oregon State University Extension Service\, Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center\, will be the featured speaker at the August SOCAN monthly general meeting. Adlam will discuss how climate is influencing fire risk in the region\, what climate projections portend for our future\, and what steps we can take to minimize the risk. \nThe program will occur from 6:00 – 7:30 pm on Tuesday August 26th at the Medford Public Library\, 205\, S. Central Avenue\, Medford. There is no charge for attending SOCAN events.
