SUMMARY:Business Network Meetup: Is Your Website Actually Working?
DESCRIPTION:This is for you whether you have a website already or you’re still deciding if you need one. Every website has 2 jobs: \n\nShow up when someone’s looking\nConvince them to act once they find you.\n\nMatt Stern will walk you through a quick checkup for both\, using free tools you already have. Then he’ll share specific ways to improve your visibility and your persuasion\, things you can start on this week. \nMatt’s spent 8 years building websites for local service businesses: tree services\, chiropractors\, medical practices\, and more.  He’s built this talk around the mistakes he sees most often. https://sterndesign.co/ \nConnect with other rural business owners and grow your network.  Meet the people who can help your business thrive.  Generously funded by the Oregon Community Foundation and Jackson County Library Foundation\, in partnership with A Greater Applegate. \nThis event will take place at: \nLindsay Lodge\n15100 OR-238\nApplegate\, OR 97530 \nRSVP: https://jcls.libcal.com/event/17010122

SUMMARY:How Should Oregon Address the Climate Crisis? (SOCAN General Meeting)
DESCRIPTION:For several years\, Oregon climate activists and sympathetic state legislators promoted comprehensive greenhouse gas proposals known as Cap and Trade or Cap and Invest. These proposals sought to impose a declining cap on statewide emissions of greenhouse gases\, while generating pollution proceeds to be invested in clean energy projects statewide\, particularly in economically disadvantaged communities. \nLegislative cap and invest proposals failed year after year largely as a result of resistance from Republican legislators who thwarted all legislative action by walking out of the legislature to deny a quorum. Finally\, in 2020\, Governor Kate Brown issued Executive Order (EO) 20-04 charging state agencies with developing programs within their authority that would achieve the goals of the failed legislative proposals. After much resistance from the same forces opposing Cap and Trade\, this EO ultimately resulted in the development of a Climate Protection Program (CPP) that placed the state on a meaningful emissions reduction trajectory. \nAs the CPP has finally been taking effect\, the same forces who resisted both past legislative Cap and Trade and the CPP are proposing to reconsider and reintroduce a legislative Cap and Trade proposal that would replace the CPP. Given the source of this proposal\, many climate concerned Oregonians are quite skeptical of this effort. However\, if such a program allowed Oregon to link with the Washington and California cap and trade programs\, this could be beneficial. What are the tradeoffs\, and what is the best path forward for Oregon? \nNora Apter\, Oregon Director of Climate Solutions\, has been deeply engaged in CPP implementation for many years and closely tracking efforts to consider a legislative replacement of the program for some months. Nora will join us via zoom at our August monthly meeting to help us understand exactly what is involved and help us decide how we should respond to these discussions. \nSOCAN’s next General Meeting will be Tuesday\, August 25th at the Medford Public Library from 6:00 – 7:30 pm. The program will involve Nora Apter discussing the history of cap and invest in Oregon\, where the idea for replacing the Climate Protection Program with a legislative framework comes from\, how it’s progressing\, and key considerations and policy parameters. \nSOCAN’s general meetings are free and open to the public. There is no charge for attending. More information is available at: https://socan.eco/events/ \nGuests wishing to view the zoom program should contact alan@socan.eco. \nThis meeting is not sponsored nor endorsed by Jackson County Library Services.

SUMMARY:Death Cafe Conversation\, 13+ YRS
DESCRIPTION:In a Death Cafe there’s no set agenda or speaker\, just an informal\, respectful space to share stories\, ask questions\, and discuss the sometimes difficult topic of mortality in a way that brings connection and insight. Participants often find relief and understanding\, allowing conversations about death to enrich and affirm their lives. Parental discretion is advised for attendees under 18 as the content of these discussions is mature. \nSouthern Oregon Living and Dying Alliance (SOLADA) encourages open and honest discussions about the human experience of living and dying\, and its relationship to love and grief. Our goal is to help create compassionate\, caring communities that support individuals\, families\, and organizations during the transitions that accompany the dying process. Facilitators Ellen & Hayriya will hold the space and help the conversation flow. Ellen of Beatha Doula Services is a Life Doula who helps people with the transitions of birth\, death\, and life. Hayriya is the owner of Compassionate Care of Choice. She serves as a death doula\, consultant and educator in Southern Oregon\, and the driving force behind the creation of SOLADA.

SUMMARY:Seed Saving in Community: Introduction to Saving Seeds\, ALL AGES
DESCRIPTION:Why save seeds? Enjoy resilient plants\, money savings\, community connection and participating in the magic of life through seeds. Seed saving can be easy and fun! We’ll cover the basics of how to get started saving seeds confidently. Gardeners of all skill levels welcome – bring your questions! While this program is geared toward teens and adults\, all ages are welcome. \nWhen gardeners save seeds\, we often end up with far more seeds than we would normally receive in a single packet. Having more seeds allows us to grow more plants\, make more “mistakes” in the garden\, enjoy high-quality seeds\, and eat surplus seeds. We become more empowered and inspired through the magic of seeds. We can also enjoy more community connection by sharing our extra plants and seeds with friends at seed swap events and with our local seed library. (Thanks Ruch Library!) \nThis workshop will be led by Noel Ruiz of Homestead Culture. Noel and his partner Ann Nguyen have been growing and selling seeds part-time from their homestead gardens for 8 seasons. Noel frequently writes about seeds through his blog and email newsletter at homesteadculture.com
