SUMMARY:SOCAN Film Night: Youth v Gov
DESCRIPTION:Film Night: Southern Oregon Climate Action Now’s next monthly general meeting\, on Tuesday January 27th at 6:00pm at the Medford public Library. \nJoin us for a community screening of Youth v. Gov\, a powerful documentary following a group of young Americans who take the U.S. government to court over its failure to protect their constitutional right to a livable future. The film offers an inside look at youth-led climate litigation\, civic courage\, and the growing role of the courts in addressing the climate crisis. A timely reminder that civic engagement doesn’t stop at the ballot box—and that young people are helping reshape what accountability looks like. \n*SOCAN will be providing popcorn and hot tea.

You can make a difference in a hummingbird’s survival. Join us to learn how to help these incredible birds—and reconnect with and care for the nature around you. \nPart 1 – February 8\, 2026 – Martín López Aguilar will share will share fascinating insights into the biology\, behavior\, and conservation of hummingbirds\, drawing from years of hands-on field research and outreach. You will learn how important the beautiful hummingbirds are for pollination\, how suburban gardens can support declining populations\, and how our food choices can impact their habitat and lifecycles. \nPart 2 – May 10\, 2026 – Martín López Aguilar will lead a talk and walk to identify hummingbirds\, and demonstrate how to submit your data to eBird to support community science. \nMartín López Aguilar is a professional bird bander and Project Leader at the Klamath Bird Observatory\, where he oversees the bird banding long-term monitoring program. SUMMARY:Misinformation & Disinformation | SOCAN General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Misinformation and disinformation are undermining our democracy. We need to know how to identify them. Join us to explore how we can do it. \nThomas Jefferson summed up a critical element required of us in defense of our democracy: “An informed citizenry is at the heart of a dynamic democracy.” Recognizing and thwarting misinformation and disinformation are essential components in generating and maintaining an informed citizenry and defending our democracy. These are the scourge of credible journalism. Regrettably\, increasingly the forces of darkness seek to overtake society with conspiracy hoaxes driven by misinformation and disinformation. They are often enabled by a citizenry seeking stories that appeal to their confirmation bias rather offer credible information that may challenge that bias. \nThat we all need to be able to recognize misinformation and disinformation when it knocks on our door is clear. For those in the credible news arena\, it’s even more important that misinformation and disinformation should be identified and given no quarter. Southern Oregon Climate Action Now’s February Public General Meeting at 6:00 pm on Tuesday February 24th will feature a discussion of misinformation\, disinformation and how the credible media deal with it. Bert Etling\, Executive Director of Ashland.news\, will offer his perspectives on this troubling issue and share advice on how we can recognize this fraud when it appears. \nSOCAN’s general meetings are free and open to the public. There is no charge for attending. \n*This meeting is not sponsored nor endorsed by Jackson County Library Services

SUMMARY:Stargazing at Wooldridge Creek Winery
DESCRIPTION:Applegate After Dark (AAD) is a collaborative group of community members\, local organizations\, and partners united by a shared passion for the night sky. The group first formed in March 2025 following an increased awareness that dark skies are a shared natural resource in need of protection for generations to come.\n\nOur “Stargazing” program at Wooldridge Creek Winery will commence with an after-hour gate opening at 6:30 PM to gather and mingle with beverages available for purchase. At 7PM\, Liz Shen (a founding member of AAD) will offer a presentation about the broader dark sky movement and how our local group is hoping to help others learn why and how to preserve our night sky. As the sun sets and the night sky takes over\, Sam Dennis (another founding member of the group) will guide participants in using their binoculars to view interesting celestial features from the sliver of our moon to planets and galaxies and star clusters and more!\n\n\n\nAll are welcome and the event is free. If the skies are not clear\, we will postpone the event. Look for updates closer to the date.
