SUMMARY:Beginning Farmer Training for Veterans
DESCRIPTION:Growing Veteran Agripreneurs (GVA) is a beginning farmer training program for veterans interested in pursuing small-scale agriculture. Over the course of a season\, participants are exposed to all aspects of sustainable\, small-scale farming through hands-on field experience at SOREC in Central point\, farm tours\, online classes\, and one-on-one mentoring. Topics include: production propagation\, soil management\, farm business planning\, irrigation\, drought mitigation\, tools and equipment\, integrated pest management\, marketing\, seed saving and small livestock operations. Class times vary based on tour locations and daylight hours but will be on Wednesdays starting at or after 3pm. Registration Deadline is April 28th. Also exhibiting are animal advocacy organizations\, including FOTAS\, and plant-based martial arts and medical practitioners. \n“We are so excited to be hosting Southern Oregon’s first Veg Fest. DESCRIPTION:In 2020\, Sherry Neuman traveled to India with a Rotary project to provide immunizations for children. The trip included visits to the Taj Mahal\, a nature reserve\, the Khajuraho temples and other Rotary projects. This presentation offers an opportunity to achieve a greater understanding of this interesting and complex country. \nSherry Neuman is an infectious disease doctor whose career involved direct patient care in clinical settings with the Indian Health Service in Montana\, VA hospitals in Phoenix and Reno as well as teaching medical residents at the University of Nevada. She moved to Jacksonville in 2010 and is an active volunteer with multiple organizations. She continues to find satisfaction in using her medical training in service projects. In addition\, she is an avid traveler on both domestic and international trips.

This event is an essential source of funding for the Food Bank and will feature dinner\, live music\, community awards celebrating local Hunger Heroes\, and an auction. Although it is a casual get-together\, it is also a big affair! Our goal this year is to raise $65\,000. \nThis year we are adding a new component to the fundraiser\, the Hunger Heroes Awards. We are excited to honor our community members for their contributions\, leadership\, and commitment in helping with our mission to end hunger in Josephine County and ensure equal access to healthy food for all. \nWe encourage anyone in the community to nominate any organization\, leader\, volunteer\, or group who is dedicated to bringing food security and improving the quality of life for our community. \nAt our core\, the Josephine County Food Bank is an organization by the community\, for the community. We would not be able to operate without assistance from the many donors\, volunteers\, community partners\, and more that work to end hunger for all our Josephine County residents. This is our way of acknowledging that it takes a village\, and shining a spotlight on the effort it takes to feed one out of five Josephine County residents every month. \nThese awards are open to EVERYONE in our community. From projects big to small\, we hope to receive many displays of hunger heroism throughout Josephine County. Award recipients will be independently chosen by a committee composed of community members. Nominations must be received by May 31\, 2023. Awards will be announced during the event on June 22\, 2023\, at Weekend Beer Company. \nTickets to Shining a Light on Hunger are $30 and can be purchased on our website\, www.jocofoodbank.org. Hunger Hero nominations can also be submitted on our website. \n#### \nThe Josephine County Food Bank\, working through its network of 12 pantries\, 3 community kitchens\, and 11 partner agencies\, helps to feed more than 15\,000 people throughout the county each month. JCFB distributes more than two million pounds of food every year. The program will feature Rory Cowal from Divest Oregon who will discuss the reasons for divestment\, the efforts of Divest Oregon to achieve it\, what the next steps will be subsequent to the failure of HB2601 during the 2023 session\, and what we can do individually to invest conscientiously. \nThe program will be on Tuesday\, June 27th from 6:00 – 7:00 via ZOOM.
