SUMMARY:Election 2022 – Now What?
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 mid-terms represented a critical moment when voters were able to express the level of their concern by electing candidates who acknowledge the climate crisis and commit to action. \nThe November SOCAN general public meeting program will be devoted to exploring the results of the 2022 election and assessing how they influence local\, state\, and national efforts to address the climate crisis. In Oregon\, the Governorship and both chambers remain in the control of those concerned about the climate crisis. The view from the State Capitol will be presented by Oregon House District 5 Representative Pam Marsh while SOCAN co-facilitator Alan Journet will provide comments on local and federal possibilities. \nIn addition\, in response to frequent requests from SOCAN volunteers and program attendees for help in talking with friends and relatives who are skeptical about climate science\, we have arranged a program to do just that. Warren Kahn\, senior trainer for the More To Life international educational non-profit foundation and presenter of a two part workshop to be held in January 2023\, will introduce this special offering.

The music helped us get through it. Revisit those times with a writer who covered counterculture and music with press credentials and a backstage pass. James Pagliasotti was the first rock & roll columnist for the Denver Post\, where he covered music and counterculture from 1968-1974. He has written for Rolling Stone magazine and numerous other publications\, and is the author of three books\, including the one this presentation is drawn from.

DESCRIPTION:Despite holding a bare minimum of control in both chambers\, during the last Congress Democrats managed to pass the Inflation Reduction Act\, the most ambitious legislation targeting the climate crisis ever signed into law.  However\, as we enter a two-year period with Republican climate deniers in charge of the House\, we now face the question of how we can continue and expand upon this climate action at the federal level. DESCRIPTION:Featured speakers: Flavia Franco of Southern Oregon Food Solutions\, Jeanette Hardison of the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition\, and Ellie Cosgrove of Rogue Valley Farm 2 School\nIn 2022\, the U.S. department of Agriculture stated: “Food loss and waste … exacerbates the climate change crisis with its significant GHG footprint. Production\, transportation\, and handling of food generate significant carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions\, and when food ends up in landfills\, it generates methane\, [which is] an even more potent greenhouse gas.” \nA 2021 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report concluded that “each year\, U.S. food loss and waste embodies 170 million metric tons of carbon dioxide greenhouse gas emissions– equal to the annual CO2 emissions of 42 coal-fired power plants.” This doesn’t even take landfill methane into account. \nTo learn more about food waste and what we can do to address it\, join Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) at their March 28th General Meeting online from 6:00 to 7:00pm.
