DESCRIPTION:The climate changes induced by global warming are affecting our natural world in many ways. Dr. Susan Harrison\, Department of Environmental Science and Policy\, and her team from U.C. Davis have been studying how climate change is influencing the composition of understory plant communities occupying forests along the border between Oregon and California. \nThe SOCAN October monthly general meeting scheduled for Tuesday October 25th from 6:00 – 7:00pm via ZOOM will feature Dr. Harrison outlining her research on forest understories in the Siskiyous. SUMMARY:Fall Applegate Wine Trail Uncorked
DESCRIPTION:Tickets are $59 each and include a commemorative Wine Trail wine glass. Many wineries will provide music and/or artisan vendors.\n \n18 wineries in the Applegate participate in this fun\, self-guided tour. You pick your starting location from the list below\, but you’re free to visit any number of the 18 wineries on the Trail. Each winery will offer an appetizer and a wine for tasting plus an educational opportunity to learn more about the wine making craft. We’ll be posting the final list of pairings closer to the event\, so check back for details. This event also provides a great opportunity to stock up on wines for gifts or parties. We encourage you to bring your friends\, designate a driver and enjoy this great event. Its also the perfect opportunity to explore new wineries that you’ve never been to before! \nUncorked guests will also enjoy being Wine Club members for a day with 15% OFF all Applegate Wine Trail wines the day of Uncorked. \nDesignated drivers don’t need to purchase a ticket and may sample the food. The event will conclude at 4pm\, however many tasting rooms will remain open until 5pm. \nPlease Note – In an effort to conserve natural resources no tickets are mailed. You have your purchase confirmation as a receipt. Simply arrive at the location you’ve chosen\, your name will be on a list to check in and start your tour. For those who have groups who want to start at the same location\, please purchase your tickets early and make sure everyone chooses the same start location. Locations fill up so that’s the best assurance of everyone getting your first choice start location.

SUMMARY:A Musical Revue - "Let Freedom Sing!"
DESCRIPTION:Clarion Theatre Company is offering an early preview of two new musicals. The musical revue\, “Let Freedom Sing!”\, will feature excerpts from the musicals by local playwright-composers: “My Traitor” by Ariel Kostrna\, and “Stu’s America” by John Buckley Sleadd. Two performances will held on Nov. 20\, 2022 at 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm. The revue includes a dessert and will be staged at Gateway Fellowship\, 4335 Williams Highway in Grants Pass\, OR. Tickets are available at ClarionOR.org; adults are $15\, children under 12 are $7. An appeal will be made for financial support of Clarion’s future shows. \n“My Traitor” is Ariel Kostrna’s first musical\, and is based on a true story in 1960s Ukraine under USSR control. It depicts the resolve of Orthodox Christians in the face of Soviet persecution. In spite of torture and threat of death\, they hold fast to their faith\, while Elena grapples with mounting evidence against her newlywed husband’s political tactics. Clarion plans to stage the whole show in 2023. \nIn “Stu’s America” we see the citizens of Bremerton\, Washington doing their part both on the home front and in the service\, fighting the war against tyranny. The central figure is Stu the grocer\, a widower trying to keep the business going with rationed goods. John Buckley Sleadd started writing this musical a year ago\, and is still developing the script and songs. The entire show is slated for 2024.
