SUMMARY:SOCAN’s Salem Legislative Advocacy 2025: A Mid-session update
DESCRIPTION:Given the absence of meaningful action on climate and environmental issues at the federal level\, all eyes are on the states. Our eyes\, of course\, are on Salem. This is Oregon’s long session\, when much can happen; it runs from January through June. By April 29th\, we’ll be over halfway through and will have a sense of what bills may be moving and what are likely dead. SOCAN’s Federal and State Legislative Project Team has been very active during this session following over 70 bills with closing in on 150 written comments from over 20 SOCAN activists to which another dozen oral comments delivered during Public Hearings can be added.\nAmong the bills under consideration\, several seek to resuscitate nuclear power plants in Oregon despite the 1980 ban\, several follow the lead of Project 2025 and seek to suppress the Oregon vote\, while others address water\, the energy transmission grid or forest and fire issues.\nAt the next SOCAN open monthly Public General meeting on April 29th\, we will discuss some of the critical bills that SOCAN is following and where things stand on issues of concern to us. We will also provide attendees with an opportunity to comment on bills of climate concern. \nThere is no charge for attending SOCAN events: https://socan.eco/events/

SUMMARY:SOCAN's 3rd Community Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Help guide where we go\, engage with like minded people\, and generate new action steps. \nLet’s talk about what matters! Our community conversation event is the perfect opportunity to discuss climate action and sustainability. \nSOCAN is hosting its third Community Conversation event at the Jacksonville library’s community room\, 340 West C Street\, Jacksonville. We are excited to move our conversation around the Rogue Valley and hope that those in the Jacksonville area will join others from the valley.\n\nIn keeping with the previous community conversation\, this event is focused on creating a space where voices can join in solidarity. Where the community of climate conscious individuals can work from common ground\, and enjoy imagining the possibilities of where our respective movements can help to guide our communities. We hope you’ll join us!

SUMMARY:Compassionate Care Circle Introductory Meeting in Provolt
DESCRIPTION:Do you believe in a compassionate community model of care\, hope to age in place now\nor in the future\, and are aware of the reality that affording and finding in-home care\ncould be challenging in the event of an acute or chronic issue? Perhaps you are a single\nperson who feels alone and wonders how you will survive\, especially living rurally and\ntotally on your own? Or maybe you have children but don’t want to ‘depend on’ or be a\n‘burden to’ them? There are many circumstances which could create the need for help\,\nfrom hip replacement to an accident to a death in the family. \nRealizing the need in the rural areas of southern Oregon\, A Greater Applegate is\nteaming up with SOLADA (Southern Oregon Living and Dying Alliance) and a\nrepresentative of a local years-long established “care circle” to offer several initial\ninformational meetings on what it could look like to create local Compassionate Caring\nCircles\, or “beehives”\, that might be able to reduce or delay families or individuals using\npaid help or assisted living in the following ways:\n• Remaining informed about alternative care options\n• Reducing or delaying paid help or assisted living by supporting each other\n• Taking actions to establish local reciprocal relationships between friends and\nneighbors\n• Preparing for the future from a community approach\n• Developing mutual support systems around situations such as:\n• medical appointments and transportation needs\n• bulk meal preparation and delivery\n• combined errands\n• coordinated pet care\n• patient advocacy \nIntroductory meetings will be held on June 11 at the Ruch Library Community Room and\nJune 12th at Dorothy Gale’s Event Center in Provolt. Both meetings will start at 6:30 PM\nand end at 8:00. Please arrive to these meetings by 6:15 so that you can settle in and\nwe can begin on time. \nWe hope that you will choose to join us and learn about this valuable tool which can\nhelp you and those you love to live supported\, age gracefully and die peacefully in the\nrural community you love. For questions please call Hayriya Heidi Hansen 541-787-\n7490 or check out our website at www.solada.org.

SUMMARY:Expanding U.S. Climate Ambition in 2023: A conversation with Oregon U.S. Senator\, Jeff Merkley
DESCRIPTION:Despite holding a bare minimum of control in both chambers\, during the last Congress Democrats managed to pass the Inflation Reduction Act\, the most ambitious legislation targeting the climate crisis ever signed into law.  However\, as we enter a two-year period with Republican climate deniers in charge of the House\, we now face the question of how we can continue and expand upon this climate action at the federal level. Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley will join an upcoming discussion to highlight continued opportunities for federal action\, particularly from the executive branch\, including implementing the legislation passed last Congress. \nAt our January monthly public general meeting\, on Tuesday January 31st at 6:00pm\, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now will host Oregon Senator Merkley to discuss: Expanding U.S. Climate Ambition in 2023. \nThere is no charge for joining the ZOOM meeting\, but participants should register at the link on the SOCAN calendar event: https://socan.eco/events/.

SUMMARY:Provolt Volunteer Day - Starthistle Pull
DESCRIPTION:The highly invasive STARTHISTLE is ready for eradication!  \nNow is the perfect time to hit this weed hard at Provolt before large plants develop and disperse on the order of 100\,000 seeds each. It is tall and robust but has not yet flowered…and the ground should be softened up a little by this lovely rain. It is easily pulled without tools and makes a huge impact!  We need your help to yank these buggers out in discrete areas around the site where pulling is the best option right now.\nThe area between the beginning of the south river walk trail and the river access area need the most attention (see red and blue markers on the map). Volunteers and BLM have been aggressively mowing the inner grass field area before the weed goes to flower/seed.\nOur incredible Provolt Volunteer Team leader\, Liz\, will be out at the main site this Saturday (July 9th) from 9:30 – 11:30 if anyone would care to come help.\nIf you can not do it at this time feel free to enjoy a dose of volunteerism at your leisure!  If you need any guidance\, please let us know and we’ll swing over and meet you or answer your questions by phone or email.\nBring your good work gloves and the usual water\, appropriate field attire\, etc.  No need to RSVP… there is plenty to do\, just come on by and bring a friend !\nIf you enjoy Provolt and want to help in any way\, please contact Liz Shen at liz_shen@hotmail.com or through The Partnership.

SUMMARY:Interfaith Work on Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Across the nation\, faith communities are increasingly engaging in climate action.  These efforts are varied\, ranging from concerted efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to providing support to frontline communities\, framed from an ethical or spiritual perspective.  Join us to hear an overview of faith-based climate action underway in Oregon and elsewhere and discuss how Southern Oregon climate activists may help stimulate additional faith-based action in our region. \nThe presentation will feature Cherice Bock\, Creation Justice Advocate\, with the Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon AND Oregon Interfaith Power & Light. \nSOCAN general meetings occur monthly on the last Tuesday\, currently via Zoom. They are free and open to the public. There is no charge for joining the ZOOM meeting\, but participants should register at the link on the SOCAN calendar event: https://socan.eco/events/
