SUMMARY:How to be Effective When Taking Climate Action - SOCAN General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Many of us want to do what we can to address the climate crisis – for ourselves\, our youth\, and future generations. However\, it is challenging to identify how each of us individually can address this issue meaningfully . To help us\, we will briefly revisit a January 2024 SOCAN presentation that featured Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson\, who developed  a 10-minute TED talk offering tips on this process. Johnson created a Venn diagram with three circles overlapping in the center where we  identify (1) what gives us  joy\, (2) what we are good at doing\, and (3) what we  could do to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. \nThe next SOCAN Public General meeting will feature Flavia Franco from Southern Oregon Food Solutions. Flavia will share her take on the Venn Diagram and how she is using a positive feedback loop to make her intersection (in the diagram) grow bigger\, both personally and as a community\, as she focuses on the issues of food waste prevention\, reduction and community compost. In order  to make progress – especially towards resilience – connections and relationships are key. A positive feedback loop can be used to build momentum in climate action either by being the center driver of the loop activity or by being a part of the loop itself. \nFlavia’s call to action is that if attendees haven’t done so already\, then some time should be used to create individual diagrams\, to take stock of progress on this journey\, and to decide if course correction is necessary for going further and to connect with others in order to make progress.

SUMMARY:SOCAN’s Salem Legislative Advocacy 2025: A Mid-session update
DESCRIPTION:Given the absence of meaningful action on climate and environmental issues at the federal level\, all eyes are on the states. Our eyes\, of course\, are on Salem. This is Oregon’s long session\, when much can happen; it runs from January through June. By April 29th\, we’ll be over halfway through and will have a sense of what bills may be moving and what are likely dead. SOCAN’s Federal and State Legislative Project Team has been very active during this session following over 70 bills with closing in on 150 written comments from over 20 SOCAN activists to which another dozen oral comments delivered during Public Hearings can be added.\nAmong the bills under consideration\, several seek to resuscitate nuclear power plants in Oregon despite the 1980 ban\, several follow the lead of Project 2025 and seek to suppress the Oregon vote\, while others address water\, the energy transmission grid or forest and fire issues.\nAt the next SOCAN open monthly Public General meeting on April 29th\, we will discuss some of the critical bills that SOCAN is following and where things stand on issues of concern to us. DESCRIPTION:Spring is coming\, and so is the SOHS Annual Heritage Plant Sale at Hanley Farm\, 1053 Hanley Road\, April 29-30\, 11am to 3pm. Plus\, there will be a SOHS members-only pre-sale\, Saturday the 29th\, 10am to 11am. \nThe Annual Heritage Plant sale is the Society’s signature Spring event\, AND – – – we need your help to make this happen! Below are volunteer positions\, along with the schedule. \nGreeters\, cashiers\, plant wranglers\, an exhibit monitor\, and a relief person are needed for: \n\nFriday\, April 28: 11am to 1pm\, sale set-up and put labels on plants\nSaturday\, April 29: Shift 1\, 9:45am-12pm; Shift 2\, 12:15pm-3pm\nSunday\, April 30: Shift 1\, 10:45am-1pm; Shift 2\, 12:45pm-3pm. Clean up from 2pm-4pm\n\nJoin us April 29 & 30 and volunteer to help to make the SOHS Annual Heritage Plant Sale happen! You’ll meet new friends\, and have fun too! SUMMARY:Expanding U.S. Climate Ambition in 2023: A conversation with Oregon U.S. Senator\, Jeff Merkley
DESCRIPTION:Despite holding a bare minimum of control in both chambers\, during the last Congress Democrats managed to pass the Inflation Reduction Act\, the most ambitious legislation targeting the climate crisis ever signed into law.  However\, as we enter a two-year period with Republican climate deniers in charge of the House\, we now face the question of how we can continue and expand upon this climate action at the federal level. Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley will join an upcoming discussion to highlight continued opportunities for federal action\, particularly from the executive branch\, including implementing the legislation passed last Congress. \nAt our January monthly public general meeting\, on Tuesday January 31st at 6:00pm\, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now will host Oregon Senator Merkley to discuss: Expanding U.S. Climate Ambition in 2023. \nThere is no charge for joining the ZOOM meeting\, but participants should register at the link on the SOCAN calendar event: https://socan.eco/events/.
