SUMMARY:Election 2024: What does it mean for climate action? [SOCAN General Meeting}
DESCRIPTION:Elections always have consequences. This is especially the case for our potential to address the climate crisis when some candidates for office accept the science of global warming and it’s climate change consequences while others display something between skepticism and outright rejection of science.  From the local to the national level the outcomes from the 2024 general election will indicate profoundly whether meaningful action is likely. \nThe Southern Oregon Climate Action Now November General Meeting will focus on an exploration of what the election results mean for climate action in the near future. Special guest and notable climate champion State Representative Pam Marsh will offer insight regarding what the election outcome means for climate action as we approach the 2025 long session. Additionally\, SOCAN co-facilitator. Alan Journet will explore what the results mean for federal action\, Denise Krause will discuss what results mean for the Jackson County Board of Commissioners and SOCAN co-facilitator Kathy Conway will do likewise for regional city election results.

SUMMARY:SOCAN Sips for Sustainability Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:This November\, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) will mark its 12th year of passionate climate advocacy and education with “Sips for Sustainability\,“ a social and fundraising event. Unless we acknowledge and address the climate crisis\, sustainable living will not be possible. This inspiring evening brings the community together to champion climate science education and demonstrate a shared commitment to a sustainable future. \nWith live music from the Bill Scholer Band\, an array of wines\, beers and non-alcoholic beverages\, and the excitement of a mystery wine sale and eco-friendly raffle\, attendees will have the chance to connect\, reflect\, and contribute to meaningful climate action. \nAlthough the focus is on social interactions and conversation\, we will have a few short presentations. Among these will be a few encouraging words from Southern Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Keegan van Hook. Keegan is the interviewer\, narrator\, and editor of the excellent SOPBS series Energy Horizons which prominently features SOCAN cofacilitator Dr. Alan Journet. \nBy participating in “Sips for Sustainability\,” guests will directly support SOCAN’s mission to educate and empower communities with the knowledge needed to protect our planet for future generations. \n\n\n Unable to attend Sips for Sustainability? You can still contribute to our mission of climate science education! With your support\, we’re empowering our community to take meaningful climate action—thank you for making an impact!\n\n\n\n\nSuggested donation is $20. SUMMARY:Compassionate Care Circle Introductory Meeting in Provolt
DESCRIPTION:Do you believe in a compassionate community model of care\, hope to age in place now\nor in the future\, and are aware of the reality that affording and finding in-home care\ncould be challenging in the event of an acute or chronic issue? Perhaps you are a single\nperson who feels alone and wonders how you will survive\, especially living rurally and\ntotally on your own? Or maybe you have children but don’t want to ‘depend on’ or be a\n‘burden to’ them? Both meetings will start at 6:30 PM\nand end at 8:00. Please arrive to these meetings by 6:15 so that you can settle in and\nwe can begin on time. \nWe hope that you will choose to join us and learn about this valuable tool which can\nhelp you and those you love to live supported\, age gracefully and die peacefully in the\nrural community you love. SUMMARY:Why do we need the Oregon Coalition for an Environmental Rights Amendment?
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Mel Martin\, OCERA Strategy Committee \nEfforts to hold governments responsible for applying the Public Trust Doctrine to protecting our environment for future generations have been unsuccessful where state constitutions do not explicitly guarantee residents the right to clean air\, clean water\, and a healthy environment free from climate change.  This is in contrast to states where the presence of such a guarantee has been correlated with judicial success.  Oregon is one of the states that lacks such a constitutional guarantee. \nA newly formed group of collaborating individuals and organizations\, with which SOCAN is a collaborator\, is attempting to redress this oversight.  The Oregon Coalition for an Environmental Rights Amendment (OCERA) is developing a plan to amend the state constitution via ballot measure (the only way such an amendment can be undertaken). For more information\, visit OCERA’s webpage. \nIt seems that a constitutional amendment is necessary if Oregonians are to achieve responsible protection of our natural environment\, including clean air\, clean water\, and a stable climate. While no right is absolute\, an appropriate constitutional amendment could provide an enforceable right requiring the State to do its best to protect the environment\, in the public interest\, based on the best available science. The justification for such an amendment comprises both legal and moral imperatives.  The coalition held its kick-off in Salem on May 4th and now seeks Oregonians interested in promoting the effort. \nAt the monthly SOCAN general meeting on Tuesday May 28th at the Medford Public Library (205\, S. Central Avenue) Mel Martin from the OCERA strategy committee will deliver a presentation introducing the efforts of OCERA and inviting Southern Oregonians to join the campaign

SUMMARY:Daunted by Climate Concern? Let's Explore Our Options
DESCRIPTION:Biologist and policy expert Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson has developed a valuable visual tool for helping us each figure out how we can individually contribute to addressing the daunting climate crisis.  During SOCAN’s January meeting\, we will discuss a short TED talk by Dr. Johnson during which she presents her vision. Rather than asking folks to try to solve the global problem alone\, Johnson offers a relatively painless route to identifying personal tactics that suggests that we first ask ourselves: ‘What brings you joy?’ She then asks us to identify ‘What we are good at?’ Finally\, where these intersect\, we ask ‘What needs doing (and falls within this intersection)?’ \nWith 2023 clocking in as the hottest year on record\, placing us very close to the 1.5⁰ degrees Centigrade above pre-industrial conditions that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change identify as our safe upper limit for warming\, those of us concerned about preserving some semblance of life as we know it on our planet must ensure that 2024 is the ‘Year for Significant Action.’ This may also be the hottest year in 125\,000 years\, indicating that we have not yet turned the corner on addressing this looming and daunting crisis. Responding to the crisis by claiming that\, ‘it’s all part of a natural cycle\,’ that ‘it’s too late to divert the trajectory\,’ or that ‘nothing I do makes a difference’ doom us to crossing tipping points beyond which there is no return. \nIt’s time for us all to reinvigorate ourselves and focus on what needs to be done. Through hands-on engagement\, SOCAN’s January Public General meeting will help us explore and identify what we can do.  The meeting will consider both individual actions that we can undertake and collective actions we can join that seek to move communities forward. If you are ready to revisit what you can do to make a difference\, please join us.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: The Village Healers Book of Cures by Jennifer Sherman Roberts
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed author Jennifer Sherman Roberts\, PhD in Renaissance literature from the University of Minnesota\, presents an enthralling Book Talk on Sunday\, November 5\, from 2 – 4 pm. Join us as she delves into the pages of her latest novel\, “The Village Healers Book of Cures\,” set in seventeenth-century England—a gripping tale of murder\, revenge\, and the perilous power of knowledge. \n“The Village Healers Book of Cures” follows the journey of Mary Fawcett\, a skilled healer who refines the age-old recipes passed down through generations of women. Her healing prowess\, however\, attracts the attention of witchfinder Matthew Hopkins\, who kindles fear and suspicion in the small village. As Mary’s benevolence is misconstrued as dark arts\, she must navigate a treacherous path to protect her life and her brother’s\, all while uncovering the truth behind a chilling murder. Amidst whispers of witchery\, she seeks an alliance with an enigmatic alchemist\, leading to a daring showdown that may render her a force more formidable than any witchfinder had ever feared. \nDon’t miss this spellbinding Book Talk with Jennifer Sherman Roberts\, an author whose profound expertise in early modern recipes and historical narratives promises an engaging exploration of an era fraught with danger\, intrigue\, and the resilience of the human spirit. \nEvent Details:\nDate: Sunday\, November 5\nTime: 2 – 4 pm\nLocation: Grants Pass Museum of Art
