Numerous studies have shown that reading over the summer months prevents “summer reading loss\,” which can have a cumulative effect. Studies show that by the end of sixth grade\, children who lose reading skills over the summer are two years behind their classmates. \n  \nThe Summer Reading Program and related events are offered at no cost to participants. A library card is not needed to take part; however\, instant online library cards are available to all Josephine County residents at no cost and can be used to access ebooks\, audiobooks\, or other digital resources immediately. SUMMARY:Summer Thursdays at Hanley Farm
DESCRIPTION:Summer Thursdays at Hanley Farm \n4pm – 8pm * Thursdays\, June 2 – September 1\, 2022 \nHanley Farm* 1053 Hanley Road * Central Point \nJune 2\, SOHS Hanley Farm invites you to attend the first in a series of “Summer Thursdays.” Bring a picnic\, relax\, and enjoy the summer evening. Then stroll about the Hanley grounds\, take self-guided garden tours\, and every Thursday\, be sure to tour the historic Hanley House. Costumed docents will share stories about the history of the Hanley family\, their home\, and some of the farm’s history. Hanley House tours are $10 for adults\, and $5 for children 12 and under. Everything else is – FREE! \n  \nIn addition to Hanley House tours\, the first Thursday each month you’ll have the opportunity to tour the Farm’s “old barn.” Built in 1845\, it’s one of the oldest in Oregon that’s still standing. In the early 1900s\, Alice Hanley had the barn moved from the front of the farm to the back\, by Jackson Creek. Made of huge hand-hewn beams with pegs\, the barn was built as a stock and threshing barn. When the original second-story hayloft and center threshing floor were removed\, a hayfork system was installed. Wagons were driven into the barn and grains\, still on their stalks\, were spread on the floor. The heads were knocked from the stalks by beating with a flail. \nAnd on third Thursdays\, be sure to take a wagon ride. Great fun for the entire family! \n  \n

SUMMARY:A Musical Revue - "Let Freedom Sing!"
DESCRIPTION:Clarion Theatre Company is offering an early preview of two new musicals. The musical revue\, “Let Freedom Sing!”\, will feature excerpts from the musicals by local playwright-composers: “My Traitor” by Ariel Kostrna\, and “Stu’s America” by John Buckley Sleadd. Two performances will held on Nov. 20\, 2022 at 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm. The revue includes a dessert and will be staged at Gateway Fellowship\, 4335 Williams Highway in Grants Pass\, OR. Tickets are available at ClarionOR.org; adults are $15\, children under 12 are $7. An appeal will be made for financial support of Clarion’s future shows. \n“My Traitor” is Ariel Kostrna’s first musical\, and is based on a true story in 1960s Ukraine under USSR control. It depicts the resolve of Orthodox Christians in the face of Soviet persecution. In spite of torture and threat of death\, they hold fast to their faith\, while Elena grapples with mounting evidence against her newlywed husband’s political tactics. Clarion plans to stage the whole show in 2023. \nIn “Stu’s America” we see the citizens of Bremerton\, Washington doing their part both on the home front and in the service\, fighting the war against tyranny. The central figure is Stu the grocer\, a widower trying to keep the business going with rationed goods. John Buckley Sleadd started writing this musical a year ago\, and is still developing the script and songs. The entire show is slated for 2024.
