SUMMARY:Hummingbirds: Chasing Flowers for 1\,000 Miles (Part 1)
DESCRIPTION:PPRV is excited to partner with Klamath Bird Observatory (KBO) for this two-part series about hummingbirds! The first part will be a learning journey in a classroom setting. The 2nd part will be an outdoor walk & talk to identify hummingbirds! Join for both\, or just one! \nWe all recognize the tiny\, dazzling hummingbird—but these birds are far more than just cute. Hummingbirds are extraordinary travelers\, migrating thousands of miles across North America while facing intense challenges such as predation\, habitat loss\, and a rapidly changing environment. In this talk\, we will explore what makes hummingbirds so special and different from other birds: their remarkable abilities\, their unique biology\, and the reasons they have been recognized as powerful spiritual symbols across cultures. You can make a difference in a hummingbird’s survival. Join us to learn how to help these incredible birds—and reconnect with and care for the nature around you. \nPart 1 – February 8\, 2026 – Martín López Aguilar will share will share fascinating insights into the biology\, behavior\, and conservation of hummingbirds\, drawing from years of hands-on field research and outreach. You will learn how important the beautiful hummingbirds are for pollination\, how suburban gardens can support declining populations\, and how our food choices can impact their habitat and lifecycles. \nPart 2 – May 10\, 2026 – Martín López Aguilar will lead a talk and walk to identify hummingbirds\, and demonstrate how to submit your data to eBird to support community science. \nMartín López Aguilar is a professional bird bander and Project Leader at the Klamath Bird Observatory\, where he oversees the bird banding long-term monitoring program. He is an NABC Certified Trainer for passerines and near passerines and has safely banded and handled thousands of birds in the US\, Mexico and Colombia\, including extensive experience with hummingbirds and more than 200 passerines species. Martín is passionate about conservation\, science communication\, and training the next generation of bird biologists.

SUMMARY:Stargazing at Wooldridge Creek Winery
DESCRIPTION:Applegate After Dark (AAD) is a collaborative group of community members\, local organizations\, and partners united by a shared passion for the night sky. The group first formed in March 2025 following an increased awareness that dark skies are a shared natural resource in need of protection for generations to come.\n\nOur “Stargazing” program at Wooldridge Creek Winery will commence with an after-hour gate opening at 6:30 PM to gather and mingle with beverages available for purchase. At 7PM\, Liz Shen (a founding member of AAD) will offer a presentation about the broader dark sky movement and how our local group is hoping to help others learn why and how to preserve our night sky. As the sun sets and the night sky takes over\, Sam Dennis (another founding member of the group) will guide participants in using their binoculars to view interesting celestial features from the sliver of our moon to planets and galaxies and star clusters and more!\n\n\n\nAll are welcome and the event is free. If the skies are not clear\, we will postpone the event. Look for updates closer to the date.

SUMMARY:Building for a Resilient Future: How to Build Carbon Negative Housing (SOCAN April Monthly Mtg)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging overview of natural and biobased wall systems—an emerging approach to building that aligns climate responsibility with performance and design. This session will introduce what we mean by “natural” or “biobased” construction\, grounding the conversation in materials sourced from renewable\, plant-based systems that actively store carbon rather than emit it. We’ll explore the practical benefits of these materials\, from improved indoor air quality to long-term carbon sequestration\, and examine how they compare to conventional “green building” approaches that often reduce harm\, but stop short of reversing it. \nImportantly\, this event will also address one of the most pressing concerns in our region: fire resilience. Through real-world case studies\, we’ll highlight how certain natural wall systems perform under fire conditions\, challenging common assumptions and offering pathways toward safer\, more climate-aligned construction. Alongside performance\, we’ll showcase the wide aesthetic range these materials can achieve—demonstrating that sustainability does not require compromise in design. Whether you’re a builder\, designer\, policymaker\, or community member\, this conversation connects practical solutions with the broader goal of transforming how—and why—we build. \nSOCAN’s General Meeting is a free\, public gathering focused on building climate understanding\, resilience\, and action in Southern Oregon. Held on the last Tuesday of each month at the local library\, these meetings bring community members together to explore timely climate topics\, learn from informed perspectives\, and engage in meaningful discussion. The goal is to create an accessible space where complex issues can be examined clearly and collectively. \n*This meeting is not sponsored nor endorsed by Jackson County Library Services
