SUMMARY:Zero at The Stone Cold Hemp Barn
DESCRIPTION:The Stone Cold Hemp Barn welcomes back legendary band Zero to the Applegate Valley! Wednesday\, July 27th 8-11pm\, doors @ 7:30pm. All ages\, no dogs. \nPurchase tickets in advance! \nCirca 1980\, The Heart of Gold Band….at the time: Keith and Donna Godchaux\, John Kahn and Greg Anton….were looking for a guitar player. Steve Kimock showed up at a rehearsal with a Stratocaster in one hand\, a Boogie amp in the other\, and the musical chemistry was palpable halfway through the first song. Tragically\, Keith died in a car accident soon thereafter\, the band carried on for a few years\, then Greg and Steve took their musical connection into a studio and recorded the first Zero album (Absolute Zero); Steve on guitar and bass\, Greg on drums and piano. \nCurrent lineup: Steve Kimock\, Greg Anton\, Pete Sears\, Spencer Burrows & Hadi Al Saadoon   \nAfter a month in the studio\, creating what would become the core of the Zero instrumental repertoire\, Greg and Steve recruited other players and started doing Zero shows. They were joined by a host of Bay Area luminaries: Banana\, John Cipollina\, John Farey\, Martin Fierro\, Hadi Al-Saadoon\, Liam Hanrahan\, John Kahn\, Chip Roland\, Merl Saunders\, Tony Saunders\, Pete Sears\, Robin Sylvester\, Bobby Vega and others. \nAfter years of performing and recording primarily instrumental music\, in 1992 Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter came on board\, they added vocalist Judge Murphy and the Zero horizon expanded. \nNothing’s like Zero. \nHISTORY… \nMusicians who on occasion have joined Zero on stage or in the studio include Sikiru Adepoju\, Norton Buffalo\, Jack Cassidy\, Jessica Fierro\, Jerry Garcia\, Donna Godchaux\, Wavy Gravy\, Terry Haggerty\, Mickey Hart\, Nicky Hopkins\, Jerry Joseph\, Jorma Kaukonen\, John Morgan Kimock\, Miles Kimock\, Bill Kreutzmann\, Alex Ligertwood\, Buddy Miles\, Lauren Murphy\, Jeff Pevar\, Noel Redding\, Derek Trucks\, Lonnie Walters\, Vince Welnick…the list goes on. \nBesides headlining major festivals around the country\, Zero has played double bills with artists as diverse as Blood Sweat and Tears\, Ray Charles\, Kenny G.\, Sceamin Jay Hawkins\, Hot Tuna\, Dr. John\, Nicolette Larson\, Taj Mahal\, Eddie Money\, The Neville Brothers\, Stephen Stills\, The String Cheese Incident\, Alan Toussaint\, Robin Trower\, Bonnie Raitt\, Bob Weir\, Edgar Winter\, and many more.

SUMMARY:Election 2022 – Now What?
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 mid-terms represented a critical moment when voters were able to express the level of their concern by electing candidates who acknowledge the climate crisis and commit to action. \nThe November SOCAN general public meeting program will be devoted to exploring the results of the 2022 election and assessing how they influence local\, state\, and national efforts to address the climate crisis. In Oregon\, the Governorship and both chambers remain in the control of those concerned about the climate crisis. The view from the State Capitol will be presented by Oregon House District 5 Representative Pam Marsh while SOCAN co-facilitator Alan Journet will provide comments on local and federal possibilities. \nIn addition\, in response to frequent requests from SOCAN volunteers and program attendees for help in talking with friends and relatives who are skeptical about climate science\, we have arranged a program to do just that. Warren Kahn\, senior trainer for the More To Life international educational non-profit foundation and presenter of a two part workshop to be held in January 2023\, will introduce this special offering.

SUMMARY:Movies at the Museum: Klimt and The Kiss
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin the Grants Pass Museum of Art for the first art film of 2024! Learn about renowned artist\, Gustav Klimt\, and his iconic artwork\, The Kiss. \nThe Kiss by Gustav Klimt is one of the most recognized and reproduced paintings in the world. It is perhaps the most popular poster on student dorm walls from Beijing to Boston. \nPainted in Vienna around 1908\, the evocative image of an unknown embracing couple has captivated viewers with its mystery\, sensuality and dazzling materials ever since it was created. But just what lies behind the appeal of the painting – and just who was the artist that created it? \nDelving into the details of real gold\, decorative designs\, symbolism\, and simmering erotica\, a close study of the painting takes us to the remarkable turn of the century Vienna when a new world was battling with the old. \nKlimt was a titan of the Art Nouveau movement\, creating decadent new worlds that merged tender sensuality\, ancient mythology\, and radical modernity. \nDiscover the scandalous life and the rich tapestry of extraordinary influences behind one of the world’s favorite paintings. \nFrom the director of ‘Frida Kahlo’ and ‘Mary Cassatt – Painting the Modern Woman’ comes a powerful\, gripping\, and passionate new film.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit & Fundraiser: Virginia Andrade - Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:The Grants Pass Museum of Art presents the art of Virginia Andrade. Virginia wanted to help the museum and donated her art to us prior to her passing. This sale is in lieu of our normal fundraiser and will honor a great artist and woman. \nVirginia Andrade was a mature artist whose connection to abstract expressionism has evolved within her work. Utilizing the effects of time and wear\, she explored the commonly held belief that aging is an unattractive circumstance to be avoided and ignored. Facing the challenge of her own experiences\, she focused on the meaning of age in contemporary society\, specifically as a woman. Virginia questioned\, searched\, and experimented with her art and\, through this process\, claimed her identity.
