SUMMARY:Beginning Farmer Training for Veterans
DESCRIPTION:Growing Veteran Agripreneurs (GVA) is a beginning farmer training program for veterans interested in pursuing small-scale agriculture. Over the course of a season\, participants are exposed to all aspects of sustainable\, small-scale farming through hands-on field experience at SOREC in Central point\, farm tours\, online classes\, and one-on-one mentoring. Topics include: production propagation\, soil management\, farm business planning\, irrigation\, drought mitigation\, tools and equipment\, integrated pest management\, marketing\, seed saving and small livestock operations. Class times vary based on tour locations and daylight hours but will be on Wednesdays starting at or after 3pm. Registration Deadline is April 28th. The event will be held on Sunday\, July 16\, 2023 from 10am to 3pm. \nFarms and ranches that opt-in to the tour will be included in the annual event brochure\, which includes a map of the participating locations. Event brochures will be available at various locations throughout the valley leading up to the event\, and digital versions will be available to download to your mobile device. SUMMARY:Dirty Hands & Clean Hearts: Addressing Soil Health with Biodynamic and Regenerative Farming (SOCAN Monthly Meeting)
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Garett Long\, Director of Agriculture\, Troon Vineyard \nTroon Vineyard “farms like the world depends on it”\, but the goal is to make a much broader impact. Garett is a farmer and soil scientist who believes healing the planet is in parallel with healing the human spirit. He spent five formative years practicing biodynamic and regenerative farming at Apricot Lane Farms and earned his M.S. in Soils & Biogeochemistry from the University of California-Davis. He co-founded Soil Life Services\, which supports producers in monitoring and evaluating the impacts of agricultural management on soil carbon and other metrics of soil health. He was also the Board Treasurer for the Josephine Porter Institute (2019-22). Since 2021\, he has served as the Director of Agriculture at Troon Vineyard\, Oregon’s only Biodynamic and Regenerative Organic Certified farm.\nHe is passionate about real\, good food\, preaching the value of soil\, and the interconnectedness of all life. He has lectured on soil health\, composting and regenerative farming for individuals and brands. Garett has engaged the movement at the intersection of agriculture and ecosystem management\, working with people in resolute action to conserve what we have\, and restore what we have lost.
